You might be surprised to hear that in this highly technical world that most writers write with a pen on paper.
I really enjoy that phase of writing because I like to cover my desk with paper, it looks like I'm doing something. Once I have got to a point where the desk or the kitchen table isn't big enough to cope with all the notes that I have written I then turn on my computer and pick up my favourite authoring program.
In the early days of my writing I used to Microsoft Word almost exclusively but as my books became larger I moved to Scrivner as a way of capturing ideas and organising them. I have a new program called Scribus, but I haven't used it very much, it's supposed to be very good at layout allowing authors to lay out the text in a way that is more complex than the multi column page layout that you can get in Microsoft Word.
