These are the 12 steps that I envisage a teacher can take towards using a coaching approach in the classroom, and the values which support each step along the way.
In 2014, I wrote a book which describes in stories and models the details of the first six of these steps.
"Write about what you know," they say.
But it would be very limiting to write about only what I have personally experienced. I've heard about, read about and imagined a lot more that I have personally experienced.
In what locations could this 'Co-Active Education' take place?
Could it be a school in the UK, cirka 1960? That would be my personal experience. But the ideas of a Co-Active education could also be applied anywhere in the UK, or the USA, Australia, new Zealand (my personal favourite); or anywhere on the Indian continent, or ...
Does it have to be Earth? What about the Moon, or a space station? DS9 maybe (for those of us who watch such sci-fi)?
Wherever we locate the stories, we take with us our old stories, our history. And we bring with us our ideas of what's right and wrong, in what we do/say/teach; and how we do so.
Wherever we build this Co-Active Education System, we have to start with a founding statement of what we believe to be true about people, our purpose on earth, and our evolution together. So that's what i'm thinking about.
It's the last week of July and I'm watching the USA Election news. I'm shaken and invigorated by what I see coming to the surface.
I want to understand what's going on; and I want to learn from it.
Whoever wins the election, and whoever becomes President of the United States, the people of America will still be neighbours with each other and with the rest of the world and we will all need to find ways to continue to live, work and study together.
So what does this have to do with Co-Activity in Education?
Not sure if this comes across as clearly as it seems to be inside my head.
I'm using the phrase 'DNA' to refer to the 'recorded experience' that we pass on from generation to generation.
Blah, blah, blah. I'm writing a book.
Yes I am. But you might be wondering where the actual stories are.
They are 'in production'.
In production, means the following.
Below is the current story. Perhaps you'd like to send me some suggestions?
"... the theme I want to convey in ths story." I wonder what that means??
As I was describing the book, I said something without knowing quite what it meant. maybe it's clearer now?
When I work with Values, I tell the story up to a decision point and invite the audience to discuss in pairs what decision they might make; and why.
In a live story-telling, the discussion about why is at least as important as the story itself.
It's fun to ask the audience what Values they think I might have - based on their casual observations of me in action. I offer a choice from three possible values at the time (at least one is strong with me) and invite them to write down which one they think is most true and important for me, Most of the time they are right! Then we can talk about transparency, honesty, authenticity etc. It's a nice lead in.
"I tell stories. I involve the public in being part of the story. I invite a member of the audience to come up and ..."
Story-telling is a powerful tool in getting a message across to a large group of people. Inviting a member of the audience to volunteer to take part in the telling of the story involves the whole audience.
Usually, I don't tell the volunteer much about the character they are playing, and I move the story towards the actual outcome as I experienced it. It is, after all, my story, so I maintain control of the story-line.
As this book comes together, so do the characters.
There's John, Jane, Janet, Joyce. They are the next J-j-jeneration.
This is a Big Book, with 3 Generations of people's interactions over 30 years
For some reason I want to have a lot of pictures in the book.
Oh, I know "A picture paints a thousand words", that's why.
I see a story page, with a cartoon strip showing the main events in the stories.
And there's a page with the stories in text form, probably on several pages.
AND, there's a text strip, showing the dialogue betwen the Narrator and the Expert.
... I felt that I wasn't quite reaching all the students in one particular class. We had had several great lessons during the terms so far where everyone seemed to be engaged and active in their own way and yet I had a nagging feeling that something was amiss.
Teachers ARE interested in working differently with the different students they are teaching.

I am a teacher, a business-owner, a public speaker, a coach and an author.
I enjoy speaking with people about coaching and teaching.
